Mushrooms with Eyes

“In Ryazan the mushrooms have eyes: you eat 'em, and they look at you.” That's how the best-known saying about Ryazan, which has become the city's unofficial symbol, goes in the local “dialect.” In 2013 the first of Ryazan's present-day “mushroom” sculptures was installed in the Lower City Park. The sharp-tongued locals immediately dubbed the “goggle-eyed” father of the family the “overseer of the city.”

About the Sculpture

Sculptors: Vasily and Polina Gorbunov Architect: Mikhail Zhuravlev This genre sculpture depicts a father mushroom and his three sons.

Mushroom Legends

There are at least five versions of where the mushroom saying comes from, but nobody knows for sure which is the most plausible. The most common one goes back to the days of regular Tatar-Mongol raids on the Principality of Ryazan. Locals were forbidden to pick mushrooms in the nearby forests, because cut or trampled mushrooms revealed the movements of the enemy troops.

A Mushroom Quest

Sometimes the people of Ryazan like to have fun with a real “mushroom” quest. Try to track down all the “goggle-eyed” mushrooms scattered around the city! The Ryazan mushroom family created by the Gorbunovs now has ten members: “The Sage,” “The Ryazan Peddler,” “The Little Porcini Man,” “The Couple in Love,” “The Mushroom Team,” “The Pioneer, an Example to All,” “The Little Fisherman,” “The Professor and Students,” and the very “oldest” of all, the “Mushroom with Eyes” in the Lower Park. Just imagine how closely the city is watched!
