Historical Background

Grand Prince Oleg Ivanovich of Ryazan appears on the city's coat of arms, such an iconic and revered figure he is in local history. He ruled the principality for more than fifty years. Under Oleg the Ryazan land withstood twelve Tatar raids. The prince won the first notable Russian victory over the Horde, in 1365 at the Battle of the Shishevsky Forest.

About the Monument

Sculptor: Zurab Tsereteli The monument to Oleg of Ryazan was unveiled in 2007 for the 70th anniversary of the Ryazan region. The bronze figure of a horseman in armor on a tall granite pedestal conveys princely majesty, confidence, and inner strength.

A Rider on a Calm Horse

The calm horse beneath the prince is no accident but a symbol. When the horse is rearing, as with Evpaty Kolovrat, the hero died in battle. When it stands calmly, he died a natural death. Prince Oleg of Ryazan spent the last year of his life as a monk under the name Joachim in the Solotcha monastery he had founded. There he died a natural death. That's why Oleg's horse is calm.
