Historical Background
The Khvoshchinsky House got its name when the family of Dmitry Kesarevich Khvoshchinsky, a nobleman of modest means and an honorary citizen of the town, settled here. This is where the future well-known writers, the sisters Nadezhda, Sofia, and Praskovya Khvoshchinskaya, spent their childhood. Frequent visitors to this creative family included Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin, during his time as vice-governor of Ryazan, the writer Garshin, and the artist Kramskoi. Today the house is not in its best shape: a fire in the early 2000s badly damaged the building. But history cannot be killed by fire.
