Malashkin House

Historical Background

Deep in Gazetny Lane, near the Lower City Garden, stands the inconspicuous fire-damaged shell of a house hidden behind a fake facade. It once looked quite different, and the family who lived here went down in history beyond Ryazan alone. The house was built in the early 1840s by D. D. Malashkin, owner of a cloth mill in Murmino.

Architecture

The merchant Malashkin's house was built in the traditional merchant style: of wood on a stone base. In its heyday the house on Gazetny was recognized as a monument of Classical urban architecture.

The Willful Son

Malashkin's eldest son, Nikolai, refused to join the family business. Flatly. He graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at Moscow University, became one of the pioneers of private education in Ryazan, and set up the town's first small print shop in his own house, which gave the lane its name: Gazetny (“Newspaper”) Lane. In the evenings the large Malashkin family entertained themselves with music: a grand piano sounded from the open windows on the second floor, drawing crowds of enchanted passersby.

A Chaliapin Romance from Ryazan

The crowds by the house were especially large when Nikolai Dmitrievich's brother Leonid, a virtuoso pianist and gifted composer, came to visit on Gazetny. At the home concerts he always premiered his new compositions. And perhaps it was here in Ryazan, in the house with the openwork balcony, that “I Met You…” and “Oh, If Only I Could Express in Sound” were first heard. The definitive performance of the latter romance belongs to Fyodor Chaliapin. Give it a listen sometime: it will give you goosebumps!
